THE DEFENDERS

The best of Netflix’s Marvel team-up

Empire (UK) - - RE.VIEW -

1 HALL & OATS

The Netflix/marvel shows have long had standout fight sequences set in hallways, and the first time all four Defenders (Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Finn Jones) come together to take on a resurrected Elektra (Elodie Yung) more than holds its own. It took three episodes to get them here, but it’s worth the wait.

2 ELEKTRA GLIDE IN BLUE

Episode five is, for the most part, one long fight sequence as the Defenders, erm, defend themselves in a Chinese restaurant. But it ends poignantly with Elektra returning to Matt Murdock’s apartment in search of her lost memories, and curling up in a ball on his bed.

3 IRON FISTING

Before The Defenders premiered, there was much angst about the prominent role of Finn Jones’ Danny Rand/iron Fist, following the lukewarm reception to his solo show. Episode six, in which the other Defenders and Scott Glenn’s Stick beat Danny up, was shot before the furore, but feels like a nod to his critics.
