Nigel Mor­ris knows all about lend­ing to the posh and not so posh. The Bil­ler­icay-born co-founder of the Amer­i­can Cap­i­tal One credit card business is bet­ting now is a good time to lend to the riski­est bor­row­ers through an in­vest­ment in a com­pany called LendUp Global, where he has also joined the board. Mor­ris also chairs posh pawn­bro­ker Borro, which lends money to wealthy peo­ple, tak­ing fine wine, jew­ellery, an­tiques, ex­pen­sive mu­si­cal in­stru­ments and even a Rolls Royce as se­cu­rity. Orig­i­nally hired to im­ple­ment an in­for­ma­tion-based strat­egy in 1988, he be­came the ar­chi­tect of the hugely suc­cess­ful Cap­i­tal One card. Mor­ris re­tired from Cap­i­tal One in 2004 hav­ing sold £136m worth of shares. Now based in Vir­ginia, Mor­ris is also man­ag­ing part­ner of the in­vest­ment group QED Part­ners, which re­cently poured money into the UK stu­dent lend­ing com­pany Fu­ture Fi­nance. He has also backed Pros­per.com, an on­line loans com­pany. Mor­ris sits on the boards of the Lon­don Business School and Na­tional Ge­o­graphic. Other as­sets keep him at £180m.
