ANNE and Matt Corbin didn’t need to look far to find their first Northeast home together. Matt had been renting 18 Irvine Place for six months before the owners put it on the market. And as Anne was ready to relocate to the Granite City from Cardiff nearly five years ago, they decided to buy it. “We were living in Cardiff together but Matt moved to Aberdeen for work six months before me,” said 36-year-old accountant Anne, who studied at the University of Aberdeen. “I’d visited this flat many times and we both loved the quiet street that’s still in the centre of everything. “As soon as the owners told us it was going on the market we knew we wanted to keep it as our home.” As the property had been leased out it was in a tired state. But Anne and Matt, 37, a regional manager for GE oil and gas were delighted they could finally make the place more homely. Anne said: “It needed a bit of tarting up and we were both keen on upgrading the kitchen as soon as we could. “It wasn’t really to our taste at all. It was very 1990s in style.” The first job the couple had professionally done was painting and decorating throughout their property. They then put in a modern kitchen in 2008 and not long after they attacked the wasted attic space. “It took a lot of work to convert the room into a usable space as it was really dusty up there. “The ceiling was really old and not sturdy so the builders ripped it all out. “Then they refloored it, put in a new ceiling, replastered the room and put ceiling lights in. “Luckily all that work – which took about two weeks – didn’t encroach on the rest of the home too much.” The couple have gone for a classic look with a contemporary twist as they’re fans of light, neutral colours and furnishings. And apart from being influenced by home magazines, which Anne loves

reading in the bath with a glass of wine, they’ve also been heavily influenced by their adventures. “We travelled together for eight months in 2003 before we got married. “We have pictures we bought while away in South Africa and we also have photographs from Yosemite National Park and the King Charles Bridge in Prague. “It’s nice to have shared memories throughout our property.” Over the last nine months the couple have made more memories in their pad – with their nine-month-old son Jamie. However, during Anne’s maternity leave, new dad Matt has been wearing her down with his dream of living in the country. And he’s finally managed to pull Anne away from the city centre conveniences. “After five months away from my office his persistence has paid off and he’s managed to persuade me to give it a go,” she said. “We’re currently in the process of buying a house in Banchory.”
