Retired couple snapped up picturesque riverside home
Pair snapped up picturesque riverside home.
LILLIAS and William Wood are regular features in tourist photographs of Stonehaven. Whether they’re sitting enjoying the sunshine in their back garden or feeding the ducks, they often hear the snap of cameras from the bridge above them on Allardice Street. And that’s because their property backs on to the River Carron. “One of the most attractive features of this property is the back garden and its access on to the River Carron,” said Lillias, 67, a retired medical assistant. “We often get people standing on the bridge above taking pictures of our garden as they like the look of it and the ducks playing in it.” When Lillias and 68-year-old retired quality assurance engineer William bought the former music hall, bakery and store-room three years ago, the garden area – which can be accessed from their kitchen – needed quite a lot of work. Lillias said: “While the inside had been modernised and looked fantastic, the outside area needed tidying up. “I planted flowers, put down stepping stones and we used slabs that were lying around for a seating area. “Our neighbour also put in a windmill, we have a barbecue and we have a table and chairs, which is great for having breakfast outside on a sunny morning.” And while the tourists often take snapshots, it’s still their peaceful haven. “There’s a spacious area behind the steps where no one can see you and we often sit there and feed the ducks. “When we have the kitchen door open we can hear the water running and it’s very peaceful.” However the retired couple are planning to downsize to a flat nearer the Stonehaven swimming pool and park. “We have two grandchildren at the moment and another on the way so we’d like to be closer to the pool and park for them.” The two-bedroom, selfcontained apartment is available for offers over £215,000.
