Family revamped spacious home in superb central spot
Family revamped spacious home in central location.
WITH its quaint harbour and beautiful views of the Aberdeenshire coast, Stonehaven is an eternally popular place for families to settle. And when it comes to locations within the town, it doesn’t get much better than this. In a perfectly central spot for a growing brood, 17 Westfield Road is a charming family home. Mum-of-three Janet Carmichael, 46, said: “When we bought the house 16 years ago, our eldest daughter was just a few months old and we were looking for a family property. The location of this house was ideal. “It’s five minutes from the primary school so our children were able to walk there from when they were in primary two. The secondary school is five minutes in the other direction. “It’s also five minutes from the town centre, the train station and Mineralwell Park. The house is bang in the middle of everything and with the beach, tennis courts and more all nearby, there is always something for the kids to do here.” Janet, a primary school teacher in nearby Catterline, gave the fourbedroom home a makeover with husband Dugald, a 47-year-old self-employed engineer. And it’s been a bright and spacious home for raising their three children – Alice, 16, Calum, 14, and Lewis, 12. Work carried out over the years includes removing a conservatory and using the extra space to extend the kitchen, adding an open-plan family room complete with vaulted ceiling, Velux windows and French doors to the garden. Wooden floorboards have been well-maintained and varnished over the years, while the dado rails have been stripped back to the original wood to show them off. And they have also put in a new kitchen and freshly decorated throughout the property. Janet said: “We put our extension on to make the most of the sun as it moves around the house and it’s made it a nice, light place to sit. “In winter, I prefer to sit in the lounge with the fire going as it’s so cosy. “But we really do make use of the whole house – none of the rooms are kept for special occasions.” Outside, the big garden has been ideal for swing sets, trampolines and football games
