Couple’s versatile garden room has come in very handy.
Couple built a versatile space in their garden
WHEN Ernest and Janice Paterson decided to build a garden room at their home in Oldmeldrum, they had no idea just how versatile a space it would become. Ernest, 60, who is managing director of kitchen design firm Paterson of Oldmeldrum, trained as a surveyor and has a huge passion for architecture. So Ernest asked architect Bill Cowie to create something special for their garden. “My husband wanted a room that was attractive and different, that also fitted in with the natural surroundings,” said Janice, 64, a retired head teacher of Insch Primary School. “We’ve used the lovely room for a variety of purposes including indoor barbecues when it’s been raining. “My husband uses it as a woodwork workshop. “I also got a little part of it for a garden shed.” The couple bought the ground to build their third home 17 years ago. They wanted a flexible, spacious, property with a lovely large garden for Janice, who’s a keen gardener. And while designing the property, they added the best of fittings and a wide range of built-in furniture. And five years ago, they took the luxury a step further by turning the room above the garage into a fitness room. Ernest and Janice, who have now put the house on the market, installed a range of fitness equipment and a sauna, which is for sale separately from the property. “We use that room to try to keep ourselves in shape and it’s lovely having a sauna, especially when you have a cold,” said Janice. While this was the third house she and Ernest had built, Janice had thought it would be the last. However, they’ve decided to build a final property to retire to. Janice said: “My husband likes a project, but the next one is going to be the last. “It’s a similar house with a bigger conservatory, the workshop above the garage and a smaller garden. “I don’t think we’ll have another garden room but this one will be lovely for the next owner to get the best of.” The four-bedroom detached dwelling house is available for offers over £330,000.
