Art of the matter
Coastal home inspired owner’s creative spirit
IT’S one of the Northeast’s prettiest villages and has a rich artistic history. And it’s thanks to the natural beauty of the Catterline area that Janice Headrick was inspired to start painting. After living surrounded by artists and idyllic landscapes for 13 years, she decided it was time to give art a try. “There’s a great artist group here and the area is so inspiring,” said the 52-yearold, who is originally from Alloa. “The countryside, the sea, the changing seasons – the colours here are constantly evolving. “I may have become interested in art elsewhere but I doubt I would have been as inspired as I am in this area.” Janice bought the property 20 years ago with her partner Denis Thomson. They’d previously let the opportunity to own the Victorian former schoolmaster’s house slip through their fingers and they weren’t going to make the same mistake again. “When we first went to view it there was a lot of interest and another bidder got it. “Nine months later they were forced to move down south and we got our second chance.” They completely modernised the property and three years ago Janice decided it was time to make a separate space for her artwork, and the couple created a studio. Janice said: “I’d previously painted in the house but I needed my own place to work. “The studio and property have open views of the countryside so I get full advantage of the natural light.” Due to the sudden tragic loss of Dennis, Janice has decided it is time to move on. “For me it’s a house full of wonderful memories that we had together,“ she said. “I now feel it’s time to let someone else enjoy the experience of living here.” Barras Schoolhouse, by Catterline, Stonehaven is available for offers over £350,000.
