Shogunning for evil lord
13 ASSASSINS (15)
Goro Inagaki, Mikijiro Hira, Koji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, Tsuyoshi Ihara and Masachika Ichimura.
A GROUP of samurai is employed to bring down a dastardly lord in director Takashi Miike’s bloodsoaked martial arts epic. In 1844 Japan, the feudal system within the country hands power to the Shogun, and women must bow down to men. Lord Naritsugu Matsudaira (Inagaki), brother of the Shogun, abuses his position. In desperation, Sir Doi (Hira) hires venerated samurai Shinzaemon Shimada (Yakusho) to kill Naritsugu. Thus Shinzaemon assembles a crack team of 13 swordsmen including his nephew Shinrokuro (Yamada), protege Hirayama (Ihara) and the carefree Koyata (Yamada). As the assassins prepare for the final showdown, Shinzaemon warns his compatriots about his old friend, Hanbei Kitou (Ichimura), who is now Naritsugu’s best samurai and could cut them all to ribbons.
