Sheriff bans woman who drove while four times alcohol limit

A WOMAN has admitted driving while more than four times over the legal alcohol limit.

Karina Karmanova, 22, appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday where she declined the chance to speak to a solicitor and pleaded guilty to drink driving.

The court heard she had an alcohol reading of 89 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath when the legal limit is 22mcgs.

The offence happened on September 20 on Grandholm Bridge, Woodside Trail, in Bridge of Don.

Fiscal depute Karen Dow told the court Karmanova, whose address was given in court papers as Manor Walk, Aberdeen, had had her vehicle engine switched off.

She added: “On seeing the police vehicle the accused switched on the engine and began to drive towards the front of the police vehicle.”

Karmanova said: “My engine wasn’t off.

“I was just trying to reverse back so the police could get through.

“Instead of going into reverse I went into first gear so that’s why it slightly leapt towards the police car.”

Sheriff Graham Buchanan said: “How did you come to be driving the car at all with this amount of alcohol in your system?”

Karmanova, who already had four points on her licence from a previous speeding offence, replied that she did not know.

Sheriff Buchanan ordered Karmanova to pay a fine of £600, at £50 per month.

She was also disqualified from driving for a period of 16 months, which could be reduced to 12 months on completion of a drink-drive rehabilitation course.

Meanwhile, a 34-year-old man also appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday and admitted driving while more than three times the legal limit.

Luke Kildare, whose address was given in court papers as King Edward, near Banff, pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with 69 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The offence, on Aberdeen’s Commerce Street, took place on September 20.

Kildare’s solicitor told the court: “He very much appreciates that drink driving is a very serious offence and he is extremely remorseful.

“He made a foolish decision to move his vehicle because he was concerned as to where it was parked.”

Sheriff Buchanan ordered Kildare to pay a £475 fine at £40 per month and disqualified him from driving for 16 months, which could be reduced to 12 months with the completion of a drink-drive rehabilitation course.
