Singer signs up to judge choirs in annual city charity contest
A SINGER and choreographer involved in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest has signed up as a judge for a city talent contest.
Sheridan Nicol, who has been involved in the showbiz industry for more than 40 years, will take part in VSA’S Sing Sing Sing.
The social care charity’s competition will see business and community groups – many of whom have never sung before – performing in aid of the good cause.
The choirs have been given three months’ mentoring before performing at the Beach Ballroom on May 20.
Sheridan will join Aberdeen soprano superstar Lisa Milne and head of music at the University of Aberdeen Dr Roger Williams in judging the eight choirs.
No stranger to the Granite City, Sheridan has helped with choreography at the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in previous years.
However, this year she is also involved with Eurovision and is helping singer-songwriter Rasmussen, the Danish entry.
Sheridan said she would be helping in the promotion of the song following the competition.
Speaking about coming to Aberdeen to help judge the competition, she said: “I’m looking forward to it.
“These people are not professionals and it is all about encouraging the participants and choirs.
“Some may have never performed before and might love it on stage.”
The event is organised by Laura Pike, director of the show, and VSA’S honorary president Fiona Kennedy.
Vicki Youngson, fundraising and events co-ordinator for VSA, said: “This is the third year we have done this event and it is fantastic that it has grown year on year.
“Over the last two years this event has raised more than £50,000 which we are delighted with.
“We have eight choirs taking part and also have for the first time a children’s choir and signing choir.
“All the money raised goes towards the mental health work we do at the charity.”
The show will run from 6.30pm on Sunday, May 20.
