‘Scotland’s roads are UK’s worst’

Evening Express (Extra Edition) - - FRONT PAGE -

MORE than four in five drivers think the condition of the UK’s roads has got worse over the last three years, according to an AA/Populus survey.

Scotland appeared to have the worst roads, with 92% of drivers reckoning conditions had deteriorated.

Of the 81% UK-wide who felt roads had got worse, 57% said conditions had deteriorated significantly.

The poll results were published as an Asphalt Industry Alliance survey showed councils needed to spend £10.6 billion to get roads into reasonable condition.

AA president Edmund King said: “While the extra £100 million for potholes announced in the Budget is welcome, the survey shows that this is a drop in the ocean compared to the billions needed to bring the roads up to scratch.”
