Pho­tog­ra­pher a royal favourite

IT IS an iconic pho­to­graph of the 19th cen­tury, and sparked ru­mours of a Royal ro­mance. But few re­alise that the fa­mous im­age of wid­owed Queen Vic­to­ria on her pony with faith­ful ghillie John Brown at her side was snapped by a world­fa­mous pho­tog­ra­pher whose hum­ble ori­gins were in Tur­riff and Aberdeen. And to­day the work of Ge­orge Wash­ing­ton Wil­son is be­ing made avail­able on­line by the Univer­sity of Aberdeen. More than 35,000 high res­o­lu­tion dig­i­tal ver­sions of im­ages orig­i­nally taken by his com­pany be­tween 1853 and 1908 can be seen in de­tail pre­vi­ously hid­den from the naked eye.
