Capsizing fears spark boat alert

Evening Express (Extra Edition) - - NEWS -

A LIFEBOAT went to the aid of what was reported to be a yacht capsizing.

But the incident off Macduff turned out to be nothing more than a trick of the light.

The yacht had been close to a speedboat but to a caller onshore it appeared to be nearly on its side.

An Aberdeen Coastguard spokesman said: “It was a combination of seeing two vessels from a distance and because it was a nice day and there was a heat haze just above the water.

“I would urge anyone in the same circumstances to call us, even if there is the slightest doubt in their mind about what they are seeing.

“We would much rather be called out and make the decision if we are needed instead of not being contacted and someone coming to harm.”
