Pair fac­ing court af­ter Bris­tol riot

TWOpeo­plew­ere­toap­pear be­fore mag­is­trates to­day af­ter a demon­stra­tion in a city cen­tre turned vi­o­lent.

Stephen Car­roll, 32, from Bris­tol, is charged with as­sault­ing a po­lice of­fi­cer and with crim­i­nal dam­age, while a 17-year-old boy, also from Bris­tol, has been charged with vi­o­lent dis­or­der and theft.

Car­roll and the teenager were due to ap­pear at Bris­tol Mag­is­trates Court to­day.

Po­lice said trou­ble spilled out from Bris­tol’s Stokes Croft area to­wards the Cabot Cir­cus shop­ping cen­tre. Around 400 peo­ple were in­volved, po­lice said, with ri­ot­ers break­ing down walls and re­mov­ing roof tiles to use as mis­siles, in­jur­ing sev­eral of­fi­cers.

They also lit fires, set up bar­ri­cades in the road and daubed graf­fiti through­out the area.
