New trains will revive Maidstone as a City commuter favourite, says
stop at West Malling, Borough Green, Otford and Swanley. West Malling, a small market town, has just about all a commuter could wish for: a junior school with an “outstanding” Ofsted rating, country charm, a Georgian high street with good shops, and value-formoney homes compared with such commuter honeypots as Sevenoaks. An average house in West Malling costs just over £300,000, says Savills.
Borough Green and its neighbours Wrotham and Ightham are great choices for those in search of a more rural way of life. Between them, these three charming villages set in the Kent Downs offer good schools and a more than decent selection of local shops, restaurants and country pubs.
However, these are prime villages and thus not for bargain hunters. A period family house with four bedrooms in Ightham would cost about £1 million, while a four-bedroom Thirties property in Borough Green would come in at £700,000-£800,000.
