Are you a typical Italian mamma? Oh God, yes. I’m lucky because I can travel with my daughters [Deva, seven, and Léonie, two] and bring them with me on set so they can be with me as much as possible. What’s your beauty secret? My children make me happy. If you feel happy, you instantly become prettier. What was the first thing you learned about make-up? As a teenager I wanted to become a woman very quickly. When I was 14 I wanted to be 18 – I remember going to school wearing mascara and lip gloss and my teacher telling me to go to the bathroom and take it all off . Why were you in such a rush to become a woman? I grew up with very feminine women around me, including my mother, my aunt and my grandmothers. Even now, my 80-year- old grandmother still puts make- up on to go to church. How do you react today when you see young girls dressing up beyond their years? I think it’s normal. When I see young girls in tight jeans and high heels and make-up, I want to say, ‘ Why are you doing that? You’re so beautiful without it.’ But at the same time, I know the feeling. It’s touching that they want to be little women. Has there been a time when you haven’t felt comfortable in your own skin? When I was 13 I didn’t. When you’re young you have so many insecurities; you don’t know what’s going to happen to you or how your life is going to turn out. When you get older you may become less beautiful but you feel stronger. It’s not about your physique, it’s more about a change inside. How do you deal with a bad hair day? As a mother, I don’t have as much time for myself as I had before. I’m lucky if I have time to shower and moisturise with Dr Hauschka cream. Can being too pretty be a handicap? If you’re pretty and it’s a problem, it won’t be a problem for long... You won’t be pretty forever. People have said that you were born with an old-fashioned glamour, do you agree? Yes, there is something classic about me. My body is curvy so I like very simple lines and very simple things. Do you wear make-up to bed? I take everything off for bed. Your skin has to breathe. Has becoming a mother changed your fitness regime? After I had my second daughter two years ago, I started to take care of myself. I go to the gym more and I had to say, ‘ Stop with the pasta!’ Which beauty product do you always have in your handbag? If I need to feel good quickly, I put on Dolce & Gabbana’s Voluptuous lipstick and use the Lace Collection Black Intensity mascara. Even when you’re tired and you haven’t had any sleep, mascara makes your face look alive. What is your biggest vice? I don’t smoke or drink much but I love to eat. I like cakes, pasta and a good glass of wine. If I have to get in shape for a fi lm, I make sacrifices and stick to a diet of fi sh and vegetables. What’s your speciality dish? I like to eat but I’m not a good cook. The only people who think I am are my children because I can do simple dishes for them. How do you relax? Vincent [Cassel, Monica’s husband] and I love going to Brazil ( below left). I love the nature, the mentality, the quality of life. The people are really easy- going and great to watch. How do you pamper yourself? Sleep! Nights are still interrupted because of my youngest daughter. When you’re a mother you know how important it is to sleep. What is it about Dolce and Gabbana that keeps you coming back to work with them? We’ve known each other for such a long time. I did my fi rst show for them when I was 17 and still at school. I like that they admire and love women. Everything they do is sensual and elegant. Are you flattered that they’ve chosen a 40-plus woman to front their campaign? It’s a beautiful message to women, that even though we get older and the beauty of youth is no longer there, something else starts to emerge that is even more interesting.
