What do you think has been Sex and the City’s legacy? One of the great taboos the show conquered was that women are not out to get each other. We were four different women who together made up one complete woman. Were there times when you didn’t like Samantha? I find it very hard to judge a character I’m playing. Samantha was non-judgemental and so positive but in a brash way. Have you been involved in the making of the SATC prequel The Carrie Diaries? I don’t know much about it. I’m very curious to see what they come up with. I hope they don’t let us down. What would you say to your 16-year-old self? I’d put my arm around her and say everything’s going to be OK. At that age there are so many possibilities and perils and so much expectation. You were born in Liverpool, do you feel close to your Scouse roots? Pretty close, I was there in March visiting family and two years ago I did Antony and Cleopatra in the Playhouse, which I like to think of as Hamlet for women Were you disappointed by Liverpool FC’s performance this past season? It’s a little sad but anybody can have a bad season. When I was on stage there, Steven Gerrard asked me if I’d like to come to see a game against Chelsea – thankfully Liverpool won. Then he came to see me in Antony and Cleopatra, which he’d studied at school so he knew what was going on. I don’t know if it’s his thing but he really enjoyed it. You gained 25lb for your part in the film Meet Monica Velour, was it strange looking at yourself in the mirror? I recently found pictures from a fundraiser I went to for Barack Obama at that time. I looked so heavy standing between Barack and Michelle, who are both thin and handsome. It reminded me why the photos were in a drawer and not up on my wall. Do you think Obama will secure a second term? For me, there’s no choice. I just hope we can convince the rest of America of the same thing. You’re starring in the Nintendo campaign – who’s the hottest video game character? Well, Mario’s kind of cute. He’s a hero, although he doesn’t look heroic. Who’s your ideal man? Someone with a kind heart but a wicked sense of humour, it’s a good combo. Kim Cattrall stars in the new campaign for Super Mario 3D Land – available now, exclusively on Nintendo 3DS
