Advice for City of Culture bid

Evening Telegraph (First Edition) - - Uk World Today -

PERTH needs to own up to its own shortcomings and failings if it i s serious about winning the 2021 City of Culture crown.

Designer Wayne Hemingway, co-founder of the Red or Dead brand, was appointed technical adviser to the city’s development board last year and is helping coordinate the Perth2021 campaign.

The local authority, he said, must highlight negative aspects of the region as well as trumpeting its achievements and attractions. As work gets under way on a 30-page application, which has to be submitted to City of Culture judges by May, he said: “It’s not about airing your dirty l aundry. Its about addressing problems and being able to show how culture can deal with them.

“You can talk about the beautiful areas around Perth, the hills and mountains and the River Tay, but that won’t win it alone.

“Those things will massively help but it won’t get a jury over the line and it’s important to find some negative things as well.”
