ROUND-UP Cole at double as Wanderers secure the title

SATURDAY and Sunday were scheduled to be the Midland men’s leagues completion dates but there are still some games to be played.

However, that’s not in the case of Dundee Wanderers II who clinched the Division One title in a hard fought 4-1 win over Grove-Menzieshil­l IV at Dalnacraig.

Wanderers goals were by Mat Cole, with two in the first half, then Menzieshil­l scored after the restart. However, Chris Watson, and Sean Dowie made it four for Wanderers

The score would, however, have been far more decisive but for outstandin­g goalkeepin­g by Menzieshil­l’s Tom Warren and defensive play by Shaan Azfal and veteran Ross Yule.

That gives Wanderers the title by three points over Wanderers III but, if they win their last game, St Andrews University II will finish second on goal difference.

Wanderers III completed their programme with a 13-1 win over bottom team Menzieshil­l IV with Bruce Robertson netting five times.

Other scores were Madras 8 Monarch II 0 and Wanderers IV 1 Perthshire II 3.

Perthshire sit fourth with a 13 point gap between them and the next team.

For Wanderers IV the scorer was youngster Jack Donaldson in his first senior game.

In Division One, Monarchs II play Harris II at Dalnacraig on Friday (7.30pm).

In Division Two, there are still a few unplayed games and the title is still undecided.

Leaders Harris FP III had a 4-0 win over Madras, Wanderers V beat Monarchs III 2-1, with Euan Brown and Fraser Dowie scoring f or Wanderers.

Menzieshil­l IV had a 10-3 win over Perthshire III, Menzieshil­l V v Perthshire IV wasn’t played and is a 5-0 walkover for Menzieshil­l.

With one game to play, Harris III require only a draw to win the title.

Clubs must notify Bill Garland of the dates of unplayed games or the games may be written off.

At the Harris FP AGM, keeper Ally Blair was once again elected as the firsts, captain. His target must be to ensure Harris retain their best players with a substantia­l move up National Division Two as the target

The Scottish AGM is at HQ in Glasgow on June 10 from 11.30am.

The Dundee Wanderers AGM is on June 5 i n the Glasshouse at Dundee High School Sports Centre from 7pm.

The Monarchs AGM is on June 14 in the Morgan Rugby Club with a 7pm start.

On Saturday, it was the turn of the Notts Sport U/14 Girls Inter-District Tournament at Peffermill in Edinburgh. The Midlands girls lost 3-0 at the semi-final stage in the event won by West District.

On Saturday, the Scottish U/21 men’s squad had their second match against GroveMenzi­eshill, this time at DISC in torrential rain.

Following last week’s 5-2 Scottish win, Menzieshil­l earned a 3-3 draw.

Albert Rowling opened the scoring for Menzieshil­l and Jamie Golden restored their lead for half-time after Andy Webb equalised for the U/21s.

Mike Ross then scored to give Menzieshil­l a 3-1 lead but Paul Lonegran and Rob Harwood levelled the score. Both will have benefited for their upcoming tournament­s.

For Menzieshil­l, this is the Euro Trophy event from June 2-5 at Electrosta­l in Russia.

ONE of the missing Midland trophies is the Morgan Cup, a small replica of the first ever Scottish Cup, won by Morgan FP in 1963, and donated to the district for presentati­on to the Midland men’s team which does best annually i n the Scottish Cup. Please return it.
