Warning over delays to complex
DEPUTY First Minister John Swinney has hit out over delays to a Perthshire town’s leisure complex.
The SNP MSP has warned holding up construction on the planned Blairgowrie recreation centre could put the project in jeopardy.
Plans for the new sports centre were announced during Perth and Kinross Council budget talks two years ago. It was originally hoped t he new centre would be in place by 2020.
However, t he t own’s community council has been told completion of design and construction is now more likely to be in 2021 or 2022.
Mr Swinney said: “This idea was seen as an important investment.”
He urged the administration to “publicly confirm that construction will start next year, and the allocated £18 million will remain in place.”
A council spokesman said: “The strategic investment group has asked for further information on the plans. The design and build of the new centre is likely to take up to four years to be completed.”
