LEWIS Hamilton admitted he rode his luck after finally kick-starting his championship defence with victory in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The British driver was the fortunate recipient of a combination of different events involving his main rivals to win a chaotic race and take charge of the title race for the first time this year.

He departed Baku four points clear of Sebastian Vettel after the Ferrari driver, who had controlled most of the race, finished only fourth.

Vettel lost his lead then fell further down the order.

Valtteri Bottas looked set to win only to encounter a 220mph right-rear tyre blowout with just three laps remaining to hand Hamilton his first win of the season.

Hamilton said: “Valtteri deserved to win. He did an exceptional job and had a faultless drive.”
