New im­plant on trial

A NEW im­plant is be­ing tri­alled by doc­tors with the aim of trans­form­ing treat­ment for pa­tients with a se­vere spinal con­di­tion.

The de­vice, known as a Mesa Rail, has been de­vel­oped to treat sco­l­io­sis as part of a world-first re­search study. The con­di­tion – which causes the spine to twist and curve – can af­fect peo­ple of any age, but most of­ten de­vel­ops be­tween the ages of 10 and 15 and, in the worst cases, re­quires in­ter­ven­tion to re­lease pres­sure on the heart and lungs.
