Safety vow to high-rise tenants after fire tragedy
A GLASGOW housing association today reassured tenants in high-rise blocks regarding safety of cladding used in the wake of the Grenfell Tower blaze.
New Gorbals Housing Association said that cladding and insulation systems used in their multistorey properties is made of non-combustible material.
A spokesman said: “None of our cladding is the same as that used in Grenfell Tower and none of our insulation is plastic based.
“We take fire safety and regulations at our multi-storey properties at Riverside, Caledonia Road and Silverfir Court extremely seriously, as we do with all properties under our care.
“Our staff members work with specialist consultants and contractors to ensure that the buildings continue to meet the high standards we all expect, including checks on the dry risers. Dry risers are vertical pipes that run the full length of the building and allow firefighters to distribute water to each level of the building.”
They added they will be seeking advice from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to ask if there are any additional measures they can put in place.
Meanwhile, Theresa May faced cries of “coward” and “shame on you” as she returned to Kensington to meet Grenfell Tower disaster victims.
The Prime Minister met the group of victims, residents, volunteers and community leaders at St Clement’s Church close to the scene of the horrific blaze shortly before 5pm.
There was a large police presence which had to hold back an angry crowd outside the church.
One woman wept, saying it was because the Prime Minister declined to speak to anyone outside the meeting which lasted less than hour.
Police broke up a scuffle between members of the crowd as the Mrs May’s car drove off.
Elsewhere there was more public fury as hundreds of protesters surrounded Kensington Town Hall demanding answers.
Downing Street also announced a £5 million fund for emergency supplies, food and clothing.
Earlier yesterday the Queen and the Duke of Cambridge visited a rest centre helping those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire.
