Firms urged to play part in festive extravaganza

- By CAROLINE WILSON

A GLASGOW community has appealed to city businesses to help it stage its biggest ever Christmas celebration for local families.

Govan Loves Christmas will hold a festive lights switch-on in Govan Cross on December 6 with live entertainment, market stalls, a fireworks display, school choirs and funfair rides.

More than 2000 people attended last year’s free, family-friendly event and organisers are hoping this year’s day will be even bigger this year.

Govan Housing Association, which is helping organise the event along with charities and community groups, has put out an appeal to city businesses to pledge their support by donating a gift for the raffle and tombola stall.

Organisers are also looking for cash to fund face painters, clowns and other entertainment.

Caitlin Wilson, of Govan Housing Association, said: “Last year was a fantastic success and we have had wonderful feedback with over 2000 families enjoying everything we had on offer.

“As a result of the success of the event last year, the local partners are hoping to build and develop the event further this year.

“The event costs a considerable amount of money each year and we would be grateful for any donations.”

Organisers are looking for donations of new children’s toys and games, restaurant, high street and hotel vouchers, TVs, tablet computers and beauty items.

The city’s official lights switch-on will take place in George Square on Sunday, as the city’s seasonal events get under way.

The market at St Enoch Square is already open for business, serving up street food and Christmas gifts and the George Square market will open from November 25 with the traditional carousel and Big Wheel.

Other events taking place include the Glasgow Style Mile Carnival on Sunday, with music, dancing and performances in the city centre and Baby’s First Christmas will also take place on Saturday, December 2.

The Blessing of the Crib will take place in George Square with the Lord Provost on Wednesday, December 6.

On Sunday, December 10, the city centre will transform into a sea of Santa suits with the annual Santa Dash 5K.
