Kelvingrove Park could host new music festival
GLASGOW’S Kelvingrove Park could be the venue for a new summer music festival next year.
The city council is considering an application for an event in the West End park next year.
No further details were available but it is understood that permission is being sought for a two-day festival hosted and curated by music legend Nile Rodgers and Chic.
The US artist performed two sell-out shows at the Kelvingrove Bandstand as the closing act for the West End Fiesta festival.
Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the legendary artist and producer would host and curate a new event, called FOLDxFiesta on June 30 and July 1.
The promoters of the event said it would take place in an “an exciting outdoor venue” but did not give any further details.
The event has been billed as featuring “some of Nile’s best friends and musical collaborators from across the worlds of pop, disco, dance, rock and funk.”
A spokesman for the council’s land and environment services said discussions were ongoing but permission had not yet been granted.
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “An application has been submitted for an event in Kelvingrove Park.
“Discussions are ongoing, but at this stage permission has not yet been granted.”
The Nile Rodgers festival adds to a music events have been launched in Glasgow in recent years, including the Summer Nights festival at Kelvingrove Bandstand, which featured Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson, the Pixies and Texas.
Glasgow Green also played host to the first TRNSMT Festival from July 7-9 featuring Radiohead and Belle and Sebastian.
Organisers DF Concerts made the announcement in January, two months after saying it was suspending T in the Park to “take stock” of a challenging two years since the festival moved to Strathallan from Balado.
Bellahouston Park hosts the Summer Sessions festival, which was this year headlined by Eminem.
The Evening Times contacted the promoters of the Nile Rodgers event for comment but they did not respond to our inquiry.
Responding to a previous inquiry they said: “Nothing has been confirmed in regards to line up or venue.
“Details of venue and remaining line-up will be released when confirmed.”
