Man dies after falling ill in pool

A MAN died after taking ill while swimming in a university pool.

He is thought to have suffered a cardiac arrest at Glasgow University’s sport’s centre and was taken to hospital.

Post mortem tests are being carried out.

The man is believed to be a former graduate and was studying part time. His death is not suspicious.

POST mortem tests were being carried out on a man who died after taking ill while swimming in a university pool.

The man is thought to have suffered a cardiac arrest at Glasgow University’s sports centre in the Stevenson Building at around 6.10pm on Monday evening.

A lifeguard rushed to his aid and performed CPR before paramedics arrived within minutes but he did not respond.

The man, who is thought to have been in his 30s, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University hospital but was pronounced dead after arrival. His family are aware and a post mortem was due to be carried out.

He is believed to be a graduate of the university and was studying a part-time course.

A spokesman for the University of Glasgow said at least one, lifeguard was on duty, who was fully trained in life-saving skills and had access to a defibrilla­tor.

He added: ‘ We are very sorry to confirm that an individual became seriously ill in the Stevenson sports facility late yesterday afternoon.

“Colleagues delivered immediate emergency assistance and paramedics were on the scene within minutes of being alerted.

“He was taken to hospital where he sadly died.

“The police are informing next of kin. No further details are available at this stage.”

The Stevenson building was closed yesterday as a mark of respect but was expected to re-open today.

A spokeswoma­n for Police Scotland said: “There are no suspicious circumstan­ces.”
