Four-star hotel is set for city site

Evening Times - - NEWS -

GLASGOW is set for a massive jobs boost if a new 300-bed hotel gets the green light.

Around 279 full-time jobs are set to be created if the development, which would sit on a brownfield site at the junction of Renfield Street and Renfrew Street that has lain empty for 15 years, is approved by the Glasgow City Council later this month.

The proposals, which are expected to bring around £80million to the local economy, would also create around 170 construction jobs to build the four-star venue, while “transforming” the spot into a vibrant city centre location.

Councillor Thomas Kerr, deputy group leader of the Conservatives, said: “Glasgow badly needs more hotel space and this application would bring more spaces for our city. Glasgow also needs significant investment, which these proposals would bring, and that’s what I’ve been championing since my election.

“We need to send out the right message to the business community that Glasgow is open to investment.

“Students are also the backbone of our night-time economy, this site has been looked at for both office space and residential but neither suits. There is no student accommodation at this end of the city and this area would make sense to have this built here.”

A planning application for the mixed-use redevelopment has already been submitted by ES Renfield Limited, part of McAleer & Rushe’s Property Division, while the Dalata Hotel Group PLC, Ireland’s largest hotel chain, is contractually confirmed as the operator for the hotel.

The firm are “keen” to establish local employment partnerships and offer a comprehensive training and development plan for its staff.
