If some­one is “sold down the river” they have been be­trayed or cheated. The phrase orig­i­nates from the slave trade in Amer­ica when slaves were taken away from their fam­ily and friends and trans­ported down the Mis­sis­sippi to the plan­ta­tions in the south.
