Vyles rang from Prestatyn in North Wales to tell me he was aboard the very first educational cruise in 1932. Along with many other children he travelled to Scandinavia and the Baltic on the British India liner Neuralia and also later sailed on the Dilwara. Sadly, after excellent wartime service as a hospital and troopship, the Neuralia was mined and sunk in 1945 while en route to collect German POWs from Yugoslavia.

The British India liner Neuralia began life on the Calcutta service, then became a troopship which doubled up in 1932 to transport dozens of children to the Baltic and Scandinavia.
