There are some dishes and del­i­ca­cies that pro­vide a true flavour of a par­tic­u­lar county or re­gion. Those which im­me­di­ately spring to mind are Cor­nish pasties, Lan­cashire hot­pot, scouse, hag­gis, Welsh cakes and Bakewell pud­ding, but the list is end­less — a mouth­wa­ter­ing menu that spans the shires and cir­cles the com­pass of Bri­tain.

A de­light­ful col­lec­tion of recipes, which serves up a heart- warm­ing, com­fort­ing taste of a Cotswold vil­lage is to be found in a beau­ti­fully pro­duced new book The Cir­cle of Our Lives by Di Alexan­der.

Di, a re­tired jour­nal­ist, lives on a farm in the tiny Glouces­ter­shire vil­lage of Syde, which her hus­band Mal­colm amus­ingly refers to as “the cen­tre of the uni­verse”. It has just 35 in­hab­i­tants — ex­actly the same num­ber as it did in 1500. But what a
