GRAND­FA­THER’s Poem

MADAM: When I was a small boy my grand­fa­ther used to re­cite a short poem to me. Ev­i­dently I found it very amus­ing!

Un­for­tu­nately I’ve for­got­ten all the words ex­cept for a small por­tion. I won­der if any of your read­ers might be able to as­sist? All I re­mem­ber is that it was about a per­son called “Fritz van der von der blink­ing stock- in- hamer.”

Grand­fa­ther joined the Bri­tish Army and fought in South Africa dur­ing both Boer Wars. Ini­tially un­der his own name in the first part, then un­der an as­sumed name for the se­cond part. Af­ter the war he met and mar­ried my grand­mother in
