“ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS”

Evergreen - - Spring 2016 - JEAN HOLDSWORTH, THURNBY, LEICESTERSHIRE.

MADAM: An item in “Percy’s Post Bag” ( Autumn 2015) mentioned the Reverend Baring- Gould. This brought to mind a story my husband told me about him. He became a curate at Horbury in Yorkshire and my fatherinlaw knew him. While there he wrote “Onward Christian Soldiers”. Apparently the hymn was inspired by the fact that the church was at the bottom of a hill and the church hall was at the top, and the children marched up the hill singing “Onward Christian Soldiers” written specially for them. I was at a church service recently and was asked to sing “Onward Christian Pilgrims”. No way! —
