Mentor to a grateful young Petula Clark during the war, band singer Helen Clare celebrated her 100th birthday last Christmas Eve at The Dorchester hotel in Park Lane, London. Behind the organisation was Simon Robinson from Colchester who told me Helen enjoys browsing our two British dance band books which she says is like “meeting old friends”.

In a television programme Petula explained how Helen, who had made her name as a singer with Jack Jackson’s band at The Dorchester hotel, took Pet under her wing as she began her subsequent glittering career while still only a very young girl. Well done ladies! You are a credit to the music profession.
