In 1833, Isam­bard King­dom Brunel was ap­pointed engi­neer of the newly founded Great Western Rail­way. Us­ing ar­chive footage and pho­tographs our se­ries of pro­grammes fol­lows its de­vel­op­ment: the London to the West Coun­try lines, the steam lo­co­mo­tives de­signed by Gooch, Church­ward and Col­lett, the grand ter­mi­nals of Padding­ton and Tem­ple Meads and the count­less coun­try halts.
