AUTUMN’S STORMS ARE, thankfully, a fading memory and winter’s coming is heralded by Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations, leading up to another fun-filled Christmas and New Year extravaganza. For many, this means the joy of shopping and where better to start than with our ideas of stylish gifts for your favourite people (pp22,24,27,28) or a saunter down historic Burlington Arcade (p52)? We have selected some entertaining Christmas experiences and events and these will, we hope, help you make the most of this magical time. Starting at the very top, see what Windsor Castle has to offer (p48) before sampling a sensational visit to Bath, with its charming Christmas Market only adding to its historical appeal (p84). In the countryside, many of our gardens and rural properties are putting on special displays and plotting stimulating winter-walks (p62) but, for the less adventurous, we suggest some very special dining-venues (p40) and there is a showcase of the fabulous celebrations (p74) demonstrating our nation’s energetic approach to this highlight of the Christian calendar. Our travel-team has been busy, seeking out the best of hospitality destinations, and, in this issue, we feature a superb Chelsea touring-base (p70), a wine-lover’s dream hotel, near Downton Abbey, (p36) and Allan Pickett’s new bar and restaurant at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre (p98). Showcasing our take on British style, we interview the CEO of Pride of Britain Hotels (p58), look into the thriving heritage of ‘the written word’ (p30) and discuss the merits of whisky, as an investment vehicle (p88). With so much fascinating content, as well as our regular features on Britain’s cultural life and travel news, we hope you will find plenty to enjoy!
