When Spotify pay record labels for the right to stream songs, they also have to pay the companies that publish songs. Publishing companies look after the rights of whoever wrote a particular song, while the record labels give money to whoever performs it.

Now, Wixen Music Publishing has claimed that Spotify owes them the publishing rights for 10,784 of their songs that are available to stream, adding up to a whopping £1.2bn!

In a sign of how popular streaming is, it was also revealed this week that sales of albums (CD, vinyl and download combined) have fallen to their lowest level in years, but that an increase in streaming has more than made up for that drop.
