A CAFE in California has thrown away its price list and now lets customers pay what they want.

The owner of the Metro cafe, Steve Snook, tried the experiment last October to see if better-off customers would pay a little more so that poor and homeless customers paid less. After 30 days, he found the amount people paid overall was around the same as before. About half pay the usual price, a quarter pay more and the rest pay less. Only a very few pay too little. For some people it is just plain weird. Even so, the owner is carrying on with the idea. He says that running the cafe is about more than just money. It is also about looking after other people in the community.
