GUIDE DOG

First News - - THE WEEK AHEAD -

Hannah Stevenson first got her guide dog Oscar the Labrador retriever (Oz for short) when she was 15. Since then, he goes most places with her! We caught up with Hannah to find out more about life with a guide dog.

“Oz makes life easier! Before I had him, it would sometimes be difficult to get around, although it wouldn’t stop me, since I’m stubborn. Life’s easier with Oz.

“You’re much more popular with a guide dog. I was told when I first got Oscar that if you just want to nip to the shops quickly, just go with your white stick! You do notice it, though – people aren’t as keen to talk to you when you’ve got your white stick. Oscar changes that.

“Having a guide dog gives you confidence to go out and do things you might not otherwise want to. One time, when at an airport, I wanted to go to the cafe. I could hear it was upstairs, but wasn’t sure how to get there.

“Just saying: ‘Where are the stairs, Oz?’ got me there!”
