Last Saturday (8 August) was the hottest August day in the UK for 17 years and the busiest day for the nation’s coastguard rescue teams in four years. Coastguard teams were called out to 340 separate incidents across the country on Saturday, as record-breaking temperatures resulted in packed beaches and coastal towns. Emergency services said they had to deal with a “wide range of incidents”, including people being cut off by the tide and young children getting swept out to sea on inflatables.
