CHAI Hansen, who plays Monkey, and Josh Thomson, who plays Pigsy, give us all the behind-the-scenes secrets from the new series of The New Legends of Monkey…
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?
Never seen the show before?
No problem, The New Legends of Monkey is all about a brave girl called Tripitaka who frees the Monkey King (a god who’s been trapped in stone) and teams up with two other gods, Pigsy and Sandy, in a quest to find seven sacred scrolls and save the world from evil.
So what can we expect from series two?
“In the very first scene we hit the ground running, literally – we’re running away from a bunch of demons”, explains Chai. “This season we’ve kicked it into sixth gear. I think it’s a lot more fastpaced, there’s a lot more comedy in it and it’s a lot more exciting.”
There’s a new character in this series – and he looks familiar. Shadow Monkey is a dark, evil version of our hero.
Netflix TUMMY TROUBLE!
Josh regretted going too far in filming one day. “I was in a scene where I get possessed by a nature lady and I thought it would be really funny if I just started eating everything that was in the garden,” he confesses. “Noone said ‘cut’, so I was just grabbing handfuls of stuff and eating it. Then we stopped filming and my head was sweating and I was shaking. I realised I’d been eating rhubarb leaves, which are mildly poisonous. I got bad intestinal problems for the rest of the day, which wasn’t very good for my co-workers!”
According to Chai, this series is actionpacked: “There are ten times more stunts – I lost count of how many fight scenes I did this season.”
The show was filmed during the winter, which meant shooting outside was tricky. So that forest you see on screen is actually fake. “They decided to build a forest inside a set,” explains Chai. “It was so big that sometimes you would get lost in it. You had to look up at the ceiling to work out which way to go.”
