FUN ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT

- by Madison Recreation · Good News · Shanklin · Isle of Wight

WE didn’t take a plane to go on our summer holiday this year – we went by ferry to the Isle of Wight!

Me and my family stayed at Daish’s Hotel in Shanklin, which looked like a castle and had a huge garden that we could play in. Every day we had breakfast and dinner at the hotel (which was delicious), but went out to explore different places. We had never been to the Isle of Wight before and there was so much to see!

Shanklin Beach was just down the hill. It was fun walking down, but walking back up was hard work! We went to the beach every day and swam in the sea, which I loved.

On the seafront there was an ice cream shop, which had crazy flavours like bubblegum and birthday cake, and we loved the Pirates Cove funfair, especially the bungee jumpers and pirate mini golf!

When the tide went out, my mum and I walked along the beach looking for shells and mermaid treasure. Mermaid treasure is little bits of glass that have been washed smooth by being in the sea for years and years. They look like pretty gems and we found loads!

Lots of people at our hotel came on a coach, but we took our car with us on the ferry so we could drive to see different things. One morning we went to the Isle of Wight Zoo, which has lions and tigers that have been rescued from circuses. Across the road from the zoo is Yaverland beach, where you can sometimes find fossils – we looked but couldn’t find any.

We visited a donkey sanctuary as well, and there were hundreds of donkeys and some little ponies. We found one who had the same name as my dad, and others that had the same names as my cat and dog!

We also drove to the Needles, which are bits of rock that are standing out in the sea. To see them you get a chair lift down the side of the cliff – it’s really high. I wasn’t scared but my mum and sister were, so they walked down 200 steps instead! At the Needles you can fill a jar with lots of differentcoloured sands. It was so much fun and I will keep mine in my bedroom to remind me of our brilliant holiday. We will definitely come back again!
