Corals get their colours from al­gae-like or­gan­isms called zoox­an­thel­lae, which pro­vide food through pho­to­syn­the­sis. In pe­ri­ods of ex­treme heat, corals ex­pel their zoox­an­thel­lae and turn white, which can lead to dis­ease and star­va­tion.
