Clubs’ worst Christmas parties
It must have been the trickiest journey home since David Batty and Graeme Le Saux flew back from Moscow after a bout of handbags.
Evesham United were drawing 1-1 with Frome Town in the FA Trophy when Ashley Williams (not that one) launched into a last-minute tackle on Frome’s Clayton Green. “He made a meal of it,” says the still-peeved Evesham midfielder. “He squealed a bit.” Williams was sent off and then stormed off.
The issue was that the pair are, or were, best friends, and so Williams had agreed to drive Green home. All the way to Wales.
He didn’t ditch him in the end, but he didn’t give him time to change, either.
“He rolled up in just a pair of shorts that were soaking wet,” laughs Williams, “so that broke the ice.”
Was the journey a bit frosty? “Nah, it was comedy, really. The first thing he said when he got in the car was, ‘I didn’t expect the referee to send you off!’ He knew that it wasn’t a red-card offence.”
He couldn’t really say anything else, mind. He probably didn’t fancy being dumped on the hard shoulder of the M50.
