Mick Channon

FourFourTwo - - ACTION REPLAY -

Who?

Southampton legend and the most-capped Englishman never to feature at the World Cup or Euros. A 1976 FA Cup winner with the then second-tier Saints, the battering ram striker also lifted the 1985 League Cup after joining Norwich.

Saints fans must love him, then…

As did club president Herbert Blagrave – he gave him two horses to stop him departing the South Coast, and it sparked a lifetime’s equine love. Channon even exited the 1976 FA Cup party early to attend the birth of his stables’ first foal. Not one to stand around furlong (sorry), Mick counts Alex Ferguson among many clients.

Any more big fans?

Just a bit. A “fervent royalist”, Mick bought the Queen’s stables and cites his proudest moment as forming part of the traditional procession at Ascot. In the cheaper seats, fans were chanting, “There’s only one Mick Channon”, before all the Hooray Henries “raised their hats as one, with precision”.
