The joys of spring

France - - Bienvenue - Lara Dunn Editor

The darkness and snows of winter are starting to withdraw, to be replaced by the first glimpses of the emerald-green shoots of spring. It is the time of year when the heart begins to lift a little, the pulse quickens with the prospect of sunnier days and an easier pace of living, and our thoughts perhaps turn to St Valentine’s Day and l’amour.

Paris holds a special place in my heart around now, unfurling in the warming rays of the sun and embracing all those who visit the city, soon to bestow upon them her blossom-laden charms. For me, there is nothing better than strolling along a boulevard in the spring sunshine before stopping for a petit café to watch the world go by – lovers arm in arm, giggling children celebrating being outdoors again and those, like me, just enjoying the change of ambience.

In this issue, we take a look at the art of romance in France and travel throughout the country with an amble around Évian-les-bains, a cycling adventure along the River Rhône and a tour of locations immortalised by some of France’s greatest painters. Golf enthusiasts will enjoy our guide to where to stay to enjoy courses at their best, while those with a gastronomic inclination are well-served with recipes, a restaurant guide to Caen and a weekend break in Bordeaux including a visit to the impressive new Cité du Vin.

Cole Porter’s lyrics, “I love Paris in the springtime, I love Paris in the fall”, may well be true, but in all honesty, I love ALL of France all year round!
