LE LIVRE DE LA CITÉ DES DAMES By Christine de Pizan Written in 1405, de Pizan’s pioneering prose work serves as a spirited defence of her sex in a society plagued by misogyny. The book, written in vernacular French, centres on the author’s dreamlike vision in which three virtues – reason, rectitude and justice – instruct her to create an allegorical city where womankind reigns supreme. De Pizan selects iconic females from her own era and the past as building blocks, to show that women are valued members of society.
