Like Le Havre, Mar­seille suf­fered sorely dur­ing World War II, par­tic­u­larly dur­ing its lib­er­a­tion in 1943. Eye-wit­ness ac­counts re­port of wide­spread de­lib­er­ate de­struc­tion of the old har­bour area and his­toric build­ings by the oc­cu­py­ing forces.
