Bargain travel

Your feature ‘Back on Track’ (August 2017, issue 227) on rail travel in France prompted me to write about ‘bargain basement’ fares that I encountered in the south of France this summer.

For the past three years, I have had the good fortune to spend a fortnight in Nîmes, staying in the studio apartment of a French friend, a retired TGV driver.

The town is an excellent base for rail travel; from there I visited Sète, Avignon, Montpellier and Marseille, to name but a few places. This year, there was a special €2 return fare from Nîmes to the Mediterranean coast and I made several trips to Le Grau-du-roi and Aigues-mortes. To go from Nîmes to Sète and back, I paid €28 on the TER regional train, so that special €2 fare was an absolute bargain!

I would also like to thank you for an excellent magazine. Your articles have inspired numerous trips to l’hexagone over the years.
