Named after the eponymous river that meanders its way through the department, Nièvre is a largely rural area made up of a patchwork of agricultural fields, vineyards, waterways and small villages. The natural regional park of Morvan covers most of the département; its protected woodlands, lakes and farmland attract many visitors.

Capital: Nevers Sitting on the banks of the River Loire, Nevers dates as far back as Roman times but the winding streets and historical houses were built between the 14th and 17th century. Such history is visible in the elegant Palais Ducal and the cathedral whose tower dominates the town’s skyline. The town is famous for its patterned china faïence which you can discover by following the blue line on the pavement from the Palais Ducal to the fascinating pottery district.

Highlights The Morvan is definitely worth a visit as this regional park is criss-crossed by hiking and cycling paths, small rivers and streams, and is dotted with traditional farming villages. To see the department from a different perspective, a punt on the Canal du Nivernais is a lovely way to €159,000 Pretty three-bed stone cottage with a garden near Chateauneuf-val-de-bargis (Ref: 421040)
