Named after the eponymous river that meanders its way through the department, Nièvre is a largely rural area made up of a patchwork of agricultural fields, vineyards, waterways and small villages. The natural regional park of Morvan covers most of the département; its protected woodlands, lakes and farmland attract many visitors.
Capital: Nevers Sitting on the banks of the River Loire, Nevers dates as far back as Roman times but the winding streets and historical houses were built between the 14th and 17th century. Such history is visible in the elegant Palais Ducal and the cathedral whose tower dominates the town’s skyline.
