Our new copy of French Property News arrived and we saw your request to get in touch and say what our French property means to us. Now that’s a leading question… In a word – Everything. In October 2004, we travelled to north-east France for a holiday. It was meant to be a week of rest and relaxation but it somehow turned into a househunting expedition in the Champagne tip of southern Picardie. House number 12 out of 13 we viewed was special. Very special. From the great village location to the fantastic vineyard views as far as the eye can see, this house had it all. It also was, as some might say, “filled with the patina of a bygone era”. In other words it needed renovation. However, we loved it. It needed renovation but we foresaw a wonderful life there. It needed renovation and we bought it. The house became ours in July 2005 and since then we’ve lacked the finance, battled floods, battled cancer and dreamed the dream but still the house is ours. Now, at last, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We have ideas, we’ve found the architect, we have the finance and we have the motivation. It’s now time to make this dream come true. A work colleague of mine used to have a passage quoted at the end of his emails which read: “Never give up on something you think about every day.” We haven’t, but wish us luck. We’ll probably need it! Helen Dowdswell The author of this month’s star letter WINS a bottle of Wafflart-briet Cuvée Prestige champagne, worth £29 (rawfrance.com / wbchampagne.com)
